Welcome to the XI Portuguese Polar Sciences Conference!
Portugal tem tido um crescimento da sua comunidade polar com, aproximadamente 15 equipas de várias universidades e institutos de investigação nacionais a fazer ciência polar regularmente. As expedições polares são cada vez mais exigentes e dispendiosas implicando um apoio científico e logístico numa conjuntura internacional e multidisciplinar. Neste contexto, o objetivo principal desta conferência na Universidade de Coimbra consiste em rever os principais desenvolvimentos científicos, particularmente as publicações científicas produzidas pela comunidade que tiveram lugar no último ano, relacionadas com ciência, política, educação e desenvolvimento da carreira, além dos resultados de trabalho de campo realizado recentemente. Esta ação é essencial para consolidar o Programa Polar Português, maximizar a participação de Portugal em organizações internacionais polares e possibilitar uma oportunidade de troca de informações entre todos os envolvidos.

Portugal has witnessed a growth of its polar community, with approximately 15 teams from universities and research institutes carrying out polar research regularly in the polar regions. Polar research expeditions are increasingly more demanding, which requires a scientific and logistical support in an international and multidisciplinary context. The main objective of this conference at the University of Coimbra is to review the most important research results, particularly of the research papers published by the research community in this last year related to science, policy making, education and capacity building, as well as preliminary results from last field season. Such information is essential to consolidate the Portuguese Polar Program, maximize the participation of Portugal in international polar organizations and allow networking and access of information to all stakeholders.

São aceites resumos para comunicações científicas orais ou em poster em investigação polar no âmbito de todas as áreas científicas.
Submissions of abstracts for oral communications or posters in all research areas.
Público-alvo / Target audience
Investigadores e estudantes que desenvolvam trabalho em ciências polares, ou potenciais interessados, alunos ou não, a vir a desenvolver trabalho nas regiões polares. Pretende-se atrair estudantes universitários para aprenderem mais sobre ciência polar, particularmente da Universidade de Coimbra. Também é aberta a professores do ensino básico ou secundário, e outros educadores (se for o caso, por favor contactar a organização).
Scientists and students that carry out polar research and all interested in the polar regions. It will be also aimed to attract university students, particularly from the University of Coimbra. Teachers and educators are also very welcome (do please contact the organization, if needed).

Informação para submissão de resumos para comunicações orais e posters / Information for submission of abstracts for oral communications and posters
Os resumos deverão ser em Inglês, com um máximo de 300 palavras. Máximo de 2 resumos por cientista (Ex. 1 para apresentação e 1 para poster).
Abstracts should be in English, with a maximum of 300 words. Maximum of 2 abstracts per scientist (Ex. 1 oral presentation and 1 poster).

Palestras dadas com slides em inglês, incluindo as sessões com convidados estrangeiros. Palestras de 15 minutos (exceto para palestrantes convidados). Posters (escritos em Inglês) de dimensão máxima de 110 cm de altura e 80 cm de largura.
Portuguese and English (Talks are given in English and slides must be in English). Oral communications are 15 minutes maximum (except for invited speakers). Posters (written in English) must have a maximum dimension of 110 cm height and 80 cm width.

A conferência decorrerá no Departamento das Ciências da Vida da Universidade de Coimbra, no Anfiteatro III do Colégio de São Bento (http://www.uc.pt/ruas/inventory/mainbuildings/bento). Se vier de automóvel, aconselhamos o estacionamento na Rua Padre António Vieira ou no Parque do Mercado. Existem dois lugares no Largo Marquês de Pombal reservados para pessoas com deficiência motora com acesso pela Rua Padre António Vieira e Rua Inácio Duarte. Os autocarros devem estacionar junto às Escadas Monumentais, na Praça D. Dinis (ver http://www.smtuc.pt/).

The conference will take place at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra, at the Amphitheatre III, College of São Bento (http://www.uc.pt/ruas/inventory/mainbuildings/bento). If coming by car, it is suggested to park at “Rua Padre António Vieira” or at the “Parque do Mercado”. There are two parking car places for disabled people at “Largo Marquês de Pombal”. Buses park at Praça D. Dinis (see http://www.smtuc.pt/).
